MY FIRST BUSINESS PITCHING EXPERIENCE

Memories of how I started my journey into the corporate and Entrepreneurship world.

I can still remember vividly how I and my colleague (Mr Orilogi Emmanuel) at Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) travelled from Akure to Ibadan to pitch for the sponsorship of Pacesetters' National Youth Summit (Maiden Edition).

At the gate of Nigerian Breweries Plc, I requested to meet with the Marketing manager (Mr Dickson) without any prior appointment.😳  Are you shocked?🤷🏽‍♂️ Don't be.

SECURITY MAN: Good morning Sir. Who would you like to meet?

ME: Hi, my name is Bolarinwa Emmanuel. We would like to meet with the Marketing Manager.

SECURITY MAN: Do you have an appointment with him?

ME: No but I'm sure he'll be interested in listening to the concept that we came here to discuss (My face full of confidence). Mad oo😄

SECURITY MAN: Please hold on Sir, let me call him first.

(HE DIALED THE INTERCOM☎️ )

SECURITY MAN: Hello Sir, there are two gentlemen at the gate. Mr Bolarinwa and Mr Emmanuel.

MR DICKSON: (He spoke on the phone📞)

SECURITY MAN: No Sir, they do not have an appointment with you but they said that they are sure you would be interested in what they came to discuss with you.

MR DICKSON: (He immediately instructed the security man to lead us into his office).

I gave my elevator pitch within 5mins. I actually gave the presentation my best shot as if my whole life depended on it.

MR DICKSON: Nice presentation and I appreciate your initiative. I'm very impressed.👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

However, I have an advice for you. Next time, focus more on what the investor would benefit from your business proposition. It is important to note that every investor is particular about how and what he/ she stands to benefit from sponsoring your initiative or business idea.

His advice sank into my medulla oblongata (Brain) and till this day, I still apply it in all my business pitch and presentations.

                                       Mrs Olubanjo Modupe 

We left his office better equipped with an effective pitching strategy, proceeded to Globacom Limited regional head office at Ibadan the following day where I also pitched to the head, Marketing Communications (Mrs. Olubanjo Modupe) and finally returned to Akure where I also pitched to the state marketing manager of De United Foods Industries Limited (DUFIL/ Indomie Noodles) for event sponsorship.

Although, I couldn't secure the sponsorship deal with Nigerian Breweries Plc but I used the advice Mr Dickson (Marketing Manager) gave me to secure Sponsorship deals with Globacom Limited and DUFIL (Indomie Noodles)

Both companies were well represented at the event. All the participants ate free delicious noodles and got souvenirs from Globacom Limited. Shout out to Mr Felix Bada (Globacom, Brand Manager) who led the team and gave us the necessary support.
